"Indian sports"....?

You have heard this a million times, mostly from foriegners. "India the cricket loving nation". A country of million, where the only sport which creates madness is cricket. The rest goes to hell. well if you havent heard a couple of whites arguing about this. I have. Switch on to NDTV Foriegn correspondent last months episode. You will get a good number of opinions which assure you that no one in the west feels us capable of performing. Some think its because of ignornace, some because of no effort on governments part and some "brilliant" ones feel cause of the physical structure.

BULL SHIT

Well it is! Atleast i think so. You know its so easy for any news channel to get some malaysian footballer and get him to give a half an hour lecture on how his country is so doing so much in the sports arena and india have no chance of ever performing. again I say BULL SHIT! Coming from the citizen of a country where prostitution is the highest ever. And where most of the worlds drug addicts come. Well I feel Malaysia needs to stop being crazy about sports and start on some welfare work themself. Hey i am not being fiercly patriotic here as some would think. I am just being practical. Often it is our ignorance when we call others ignorant.
Yes it is true that we havnt been able to perform, which is our fault. and i also know that we are cricket crazy. majority. But what the reason is behind that no one seems to want to know or understand. India is developing. period. A developing 'welfare state' has more issues than a football game. Yes cricket is a loved sport, but then thats because what other choice do the people have. They exactly havent been exposed to a variety of sports. In a nation of so many under poverty line right now broadcasting importance of tennis takes kind of a backseat. Cricket is popular because its been played for centuries. The british raj had a great hand in taking this sport to different parts of the country.
and like someone pointed out on the show. if we are such a cricket loving nation why aren't we number one. Well if england is such a football loving nation why isnt it Number 1? Why is getting beaten over and over again. Do i need to give more examples. Coz believe me i have them.
the goverment is trying. The people are trying. Until facilites are there nothing can be done. Often great talent gets unnoticed. But its is know heartening to see such new talent crop up.
Sania Mirza is no new discovery. Everyone was shocked when she stormed into the australian open and then went on to defeat American Open champion at the Dubai Open. And then theres Kartikeyn who became Indias first formula one driver. and how can we forget Pankaj Advani the new billiards and snooker world campion ( at only 19).
Yes i admit its disapointing to see Indias performance at the Athens Olympics. But i think the future is really bright. And I think one must understand that every country faces some kind of problem. And being a developing country makes situations even worst. But it takes time for great things to happen. and we must stopw orrying about the future. And most of all stop comparing ouselves to other developed countries. Hey remember we have been freed for only 58 years. Where was the brilliant US after 50 years of freedom? Fighting civil wars.
Yeah i think we are a lot better off. Period.

As is the case, there are as many opinions about an issue as the number of people commenting. To a certain extent, yeah....some feature an indubitable negative view and some feature an overly nit-picking view. But our politicians are also no angelic figures with halos behind them....
The "physical structure" is to blame to a certain extent...but true... it's only been 58 years since independance!...
So, a slight delay until India takes over the world headstrong :)

another important point with regards to cricket is that u don't need any expensive equipement, just a wooden bat and any ball. no need for large ground, just a alley is enough. u don't have physical power, the height . just be able to play thats all.
